Your Hometown

Snorkeling in my Hometown

1)   Think of your hometown, what kind of environment is present there? Is it a city? Is it the country? The seaside? What natural sites would you see there on a regular basis?

2)   How has this area changed over time? What do you think has caused these changes? Examples: Community growth, pollution, storm damage.

3)   According to the issues you've identified, what do you think long term affects could be? What ideas do you have to help these issues?

4)  What animals are present there? Common and uncommon.

5)   Do you think that human and animal encounters are an issue in your hometown? Why or why not? What causes these interactions to happen? Deforestation? Over-abundance of animals? How do they affect that environment. Research may be necessary to support your response.

Areas and Parks Protected in NS

Cleveland Beach Provincial Park, NS

NS Provincial Environmental Document

I have provided a link to a provincial document discussing goals and plans for protecting Nova Scotia's various parks, and protected natural areas. This document will be helpful in the upcoming project for informational purposes to cite in your essay, if this is the topic you choose. Remember, you need 4 reputable sources for your essay that will be accompanying your projects. If you missed this class, please come and see me for the outline and requirements. You can choose any area in the world to discuss their environmental protection initiatives, but find the documentation to support your findings.

Here is a list of some of the protected parks and areas of Nova Scotia:

  • French River
  • Ogden Round Lake
  • The Big Bog
  • Kejimkujik National Park
1)    Now discover 7 more of our province's protected areas. List them. Choose 4 from your list and write a paragraph for each telling me about that protected area, and why you chose it.

6th Extinction

1) Watch this video about the 6th Extinction. It is 50 minutes long, so allot enough time to watch the whole documentary and write down 3 things that shocked you and why, and bring those to class to discuss.

2) Based on the video and what we have been learning in class about environmental issues, what ideas could you come up with to help these issues be resolved? Give 3 ideas and explain how they work.
